Line-S Racing & Freestyle Tour

December was a busy month for the Ski Club Line-S team as we embarked on a mission to visit five resorts in four days…

For the second year, running we worked alongside NUCO Travel to sponsor race and freestyle events with university groups from across the UK. With a little help from our friends at Spaceship rentals, we loaded up a mountain of banners, flags, medals, t-shirts and of course a tonne of hot dog stickers, and hit the road.

First on our radar was the king of student resorts, Val Thorens. Sheffski, Skum and Sheffield Hallam braved near whiteout conditions to challenge each other at an afternoon of racing. Over two hours teams tore up the Stade slope with plenty of support from the sidelines. The fans kept cosy with vin chaud and a barbecue, watching Sheffski claim victory and storm the podium to celebrate their win.

After wrapping up the racing the Line-S team got straight back on the road to Avoriaz, travelling from one end of the alps to the other and collecting an extra team member en route. Day two of the tour saw beautiful bluebird conditions in Avoriaz and a park shaped to perfection by the slope team. Keen competitors from University of Nottingham Snowsports and Trent Snowsports lapped the park, swapping between the kicker line of two jumps and boxes. As always, the vin chaud flowed and the supporters were treated to a stunning sunset view as they cheered on their riders. That night the team were back on the road clocking up more hairpin bends en route to the Tarentaise Valley.

On day three the weather was a tricky mistress, gracing us with beautiful sun in the morning but turning to whiteout in the afternoon. Racers from Liverpool Snow were not put off by the conditions however, and tackled the course on Val D’Isère’s Savonette slope despite a few inches of fresh powder slowing them down. Supporters got into the après spirit with lots of dancing in front of the DJ tent blasting tunes across the slope, and the race champions may have had numb toes but they all claimed a medal and some cheeky Planks prizes on top!

Thursday brought clear conditions to Les Arcs and Tignes where we held our final events. Brumski dominated the resort in Les Arcs where a park was created on the doorstep of Chez Bousbou.  Freestyle fanatics got stuck in where they had the option of a kicker, corrugated pipe or flat box. Despite the kicker being small, Brumski pulled off some huge backflips and spins for the crowd, encouraging everyone to give it a try. Meanwhile over in Tignes, Loughborough Sno, Swansea Snowriders and UWE Snowsports headed to Le Coffee in the middle of town for another rail jam. It was great to see lots of entry-level competitors giving both lines of boxes and kickers a try and the spectacular bails drew as many cheers as the tricks that were landed.

It was fantastic to see such a great turnout in each resort we visited, with about 1,000 students getting involved not to mention plenty of reps helping to shape the parks, dish out vin chaud and distribute all the stickers and prizes. If you competed this year, we salute you! And if you came along to spectate, we hope to see you in a bib next year.

Now that the season is in full swing, we are looking ahead to Main Event in April which will be back on snow in Les Deux Alpes! If you got involved with any racing or freestyle during your trip, you can compete for BUCS points at Main Event along with loads of rival universities.

For a second year running we have an exclusive partnership with NUCO Travel where all travellers can claim free Ski Club Line-S membership worth £20.
