There’s a reason why Alpe d’Huez is packed with uni groups each season. With bouncing late night spots and a plenty of bars to peruse, the resort offers a superb variety of venues for slurping shots and stamping your ski boots after sundown.
Best for: after dinner rowdiness
Serving up live bands every Thursday, expect table dancing and cheap drinks in this renowned institution. Huge portions of tex mex food can help line the stomach, but when you’ve guzzled back several of their cheap jugs of beers, the only solution to stave off the hangover is to jump on the tables and get grooving.
La Folie Douce
Best for: après antics
The infamous Folie Douce chain took aprés ski and epitomised it. Picture Ibiza, but in the snow. With DJ’s blasting on the decks, pints a plenty and a plethora of pleasure seekers pulling shapes on the decking, this is the place to start your post-ski session. They’ve even got a webcam, so you can check out the dance moves and see if it’s worth heading up to get down. Regardless of conditions, whether blazing sun or blizzards, the party rages here from 2.30pm daily. Located near Marmot 1 chairlift, just follow the noise of ski boots stamping on tables to find this spot.
Best for: stumbling home
Shuffle off the lifts and into the centre of town to continue the après party at this bar (unsurprisingly) decked out with a London Underground theme. The snowboards that line the walls inject an alpine atmosphere and the bar's location under a hotel makes it super handy if you’re staying here.
Best for: sliding down to the bathrooms
With a slide down to the loos, this venue was never going to be normal. From 9pm, the stock exchange system kicks in and drink prices change every 100 seconds. There’s a range of beers on tap and they also serve snacks so you can attempt to sober up before waddling back to your accommodation.
Best for: ALL the rum
This pirate themed bar serves a ridiculous selection of rum. Head here to sample flavours you didn't know existed, and turn up in fancy dress to get served first every time!
Best for: sunny shots on the terrace
Owned by the same crew as the notorious Dick’s Tea Bar, Sphere’s south facing terrace is the place to be on sun-soaked days. The bar also hosts karaoke nights and themed evenings. Alpe d’Huez is known as the “l’ile en soleil” (the island in the sun) and after an afternoon tanning on this terrace, you’ll see why. You could attribute your rouged visage to an alcohol flush after slurping back too many shots - but it’s more likely to be from the scorching sun on the terrace.
Going Out Out?
Igloo Nightclub or Les Caves des Alpes
Still feeling like jiving? Head on to Igloo or Caves to keep downing back the drinks amidst a sea of writhing bodies and hands waving in the air. Prices are high, but so is the fun factor in these bars where you can rave on until 5.30am.
